Blockstream and the Bitcoin Lightning project are proud to be participating in Outreachy, a program to help groups that are underrepresented in free and open source software get involved. For detailed information about Outreachy, including how to apply, see the [main project page](https://wiki.gnome.org/Outreachy).
Applications for this round of Outreachy close on the 2nd of November.
## Getting started
The best way to get started is to read Lightning's Get Involved page. From there you can find information about the project issue tracker and mailing lists, links to instructions for building the prototype from source.
The best place to talk about lightning development is on the [lightning-dev IRC channel](http://irc.freenode.net), while the [lightning development mailing list](http://lists.linuxfoundation.org/mailman/listinfo/lightning-dev) can be used for deeper architectural and design discussions. You can ask about the lightning Outreachy project on the IRC channel, or ask the main mentor [Rusty Russell](mailto:rusty@rustcorp.com.au) directly. He's in Australia, so you might not get an immediate response!

## Projects
[Blockstream](https://blockstream.com) is sponsoring one intern for Lightning:

Mentor: [Rusty Russell](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rusty_Russell)

Lightning needs a directory, so people can find both a random selection of other nodes to talk to at the beginning, and to find specific nodes they might want to connect to later on. The proposal is to use Bittorrent's existing distributed hash table for this, since it seems to be robust and scale extremely well.
The only way to find out how well it works is to try it, so let's do that! You'll be playing with bit torrent libraries, and the evolving lightning daemon reference implementation. You're sure to encounter
fun bugs to tease your mentor with (who wrote much of it), and discover lots of ways to improve things.
If cryptography and computer networking sound fun, and you know some C programming, please complete the [tutorial](Outreachy-tutorial) before 2nd November!
